A defective boiler can cause major complications such as delayed installation, gas leaks, and increased power bills. It's important to maintain your boiler regularly (every two years) to make sure everything is running smoothly.

Broken boilers should be repaired by a licensed and insured engineer. There are a number of reasons why you might need to repair your boilers: leaking pipes, clogged vents, and faulty valves or motors. You should never take on the job yourself (like clearing clogged vents), this could endanger the life of the people living in the building and cause significant damage to your boiler system.

Boiler problems

common boiler issues

Boiler problems can vary, but here is a list of boiler faults that you may come across:

Iron-based anode rod clogging.

The anode rod in your boiler is used to prevent corrosion in the tank. However, if the water is corrosive, it will cause the rod to clog with rust and other debris.

Low or no hot water pressure.

If there's no hot water pressure in your home, it could be due to a number of different things such as a faulty thermostat, bad heating element, restricted venting system, etc.

Lack of hot-water flow

(also known as "flat lack") and high gas consumption could be caused by corrosion, debris or sediment in the heating system,

Gas is not burning.

If there's no gas entering the boiler due to a lack of supply, low pressure or poor venting, then your boiler won't be able to work properly. This can cause damage to your boiler over time if not fixed.

Condensate overflow.

This is when too much condensate forms in the boiler and causes it to overflow through a safety valve.

Water level is too high or low (depending on type of boiler)

The internal parts do not work properly due to debris, corrosion or damage from external factors such as road salt and weather conditions.

Fault finding

The best way to find a fault is to first diagnose the symptoms and then troubleshoot the problem.

1) The easiest place to start is by reading your boiler's manual. This should tell you what typical problems are, and how they're usually fixed.

2) Next, check for blockages or other obstructions that might be causing pressure loss or lack of heat.

3) Check if there's an abnormal noise coming from your heating system-this can indicate issues with the fan motor, water pump, burner valve or gas supply pipe

4) Be aware of any unusual smells such as burning plastic (indicating a wiring issue), rotten eggs (indicating gas leaks), and wet dog (indicating excessive humidity).

5) Make sure all gas and electrical supply is correct and working properly.

If the fault is due to a lack of power, water or oxygen flow, you may need expert help as these can be dangerous problems that could result in major damage if not fixed by a professional.

finding a good boiler engineer

When it comes to finding a good boiler engineer, you want someone who is professional and knowledgeable.

The best way to find a qualified engineer is by asking around or looking for references on the company's website.  If possible, ask about how long they've been in business and what makes them different from other engineers in your area. While there are some boiler repair companies that offer their services 24/7, not all of them do-so this could be something worth noting as well.  It never hurts to get more than one quote before making your decision!

Choose Gas Safe Registered Engineers

Boiler engineers should be specially trained to work on boilers and provide a range of support including safety checks, installations, repairs. We always recommend finding a Gas Safe engineer when it comes to heating systems because these engineers have received training from the government on safety and installation.

Gas Safe register engineers should display their registration number on all paperwork and verbal communications with customers to demonstrate they comply with strict training requirements. In order for an engineer to get registered they need to undertake a Certificate Course in Domestic & Commercial Gas Safety.

To find a Gas Safe Engineer you can check out the list of companies that offer boilers services from gas safe engineers or by visiting the gas safe website. The company will either be " gas safe registered" or "gas safe accredited".

How much does a boiler repair cost?

The average cost of a boiler repair in the UK is around £130, and will depend on the size and duration of the repair.

There are a few things to check when determining the cost:

1) The size of your heating system

2) How many years your boiler has been installed

3) The severity of your problem can have an impact on price- if it's just something small, then you should expect to pay less. However, if it needs more extensive repairs, you should expect to pay more.

You may want to receive some quotes from different companies before choosing who you're going to use. If the cost of repair is too high, you might want to look into purchasing a new boiler or heating system.

How Long will the boiler repair take

The length of a boiler repair can depend on a number of factors, but it's usually going to take anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

For example, if there are just simple leaks or loose fittings that have been causing pressure loss, then the problem should be easy to diagnose and the work should only take a couple hours.

However, if your heating system has been experiencing more serious problems such as clogged pipes or broken valves, then it will likely take longer for the engineer to locate and fix the issue.
